An air barrier limits uncontrolled airflow through the building enclosure. Its continuity at seams, transitions, and penetrations matters as much as the material used.

Why it matters

A gap at a window or floor connection can leave an air path even when each insulated cavity looks complete.

Air sealing#

Air sealing closes leaks at joints, penetrations, and transitions to reduce uncontrolled airflow. It should form a continuous air-control path rather than a collection of isolated foam spots.

Why it matters

Substantial tightening can change ventilation needs, so the job should include the appropriate whole-house checks.

Authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)#

Also called AHJ, code official

The authority having jurisdiction, often shortened to AHJ, is the local organization or official responsible for interpreting and enforcing applicable code and permit requirements. Product literature does not replace its decision.

Why it matters

A detail accepted under another code edition may need different documentation before your local inspection.

Backer rod#

Backer rod is a compressible material placed in a joint to provide backing and help control sealant geometry where the selected system calls for it. Rod type, size, and compatibility must fit the detail.

Why it matters

An unsupported smear of caulk over a wide gap may not form the movement-tolerant joint the design requires.

Blower door test#

Also called blower-door test, blower door testing

A blower door test uses a fan and pressure measurements to evaluate building air leakage under defined conditions. Qualified diagnostic work can help locate connected leakage paths.

Why it matters

A whole-house result does not by itself prove that one garage boundary is well sealed or that foam is correctly cured.

Board foot#

Also called board feet, bd ft

One board foot is a volume of 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch. Board feet estimate material volume, not thermal performance or guaranteed field coverage.

Why it matters

A volume estimate cannot determine how thick the insulation must be or guarantee how many packages will cover the job.

Bulk water#

Also called liquid water

Bulk water is liquid water from rain, plumbing leaks, or groundwater. Insulation is not a substitute for drainage, flashing, leak repair, or capillary control.

Why it matters

Covering an active leak can hide its path and delay the repair while surrounding materials remain wet.

Capillary break#

A capillary break interrupts the movement of liquid water through connected pores in materials. Foundation details may use one between damp masonry and moisture-sensitive construction.

Why it matters

Covering an old sill does not supply a missing capillary break beneath the wood.

Cellulose insulation#

Also called cellulose

Cellulose insulation is commonly made from processed paper fibers with additives and supplied for specified loose-fill, dense-pack, or other installation methods. Coverage and density requirements depend on the exact system.

Why it matters

An attic bag-coverage figure cannot be reused as a wall dense-pack specification.

Class A#

For foam-plastic surface-burning claims, Class A refers to a classification under the stated test and configuration. It does not establish an hourly fire-resistance rating or permission to leave foam exposed.

Why it matters

A Class A claim does not establish permission to leave foam exposed in a basement or occupied room.

Closed-cell foam#

Also called closed-cell spray foam

Closed-cell foam is a denser, more rigid foam category with mostly closed cells. Thermal resistance, vapor permeance, approved uses, and required thickness remain exact-product questions.

Why it matters

A low-permeance foam layer can reduce inward drying, so the surrounding roof or wall layers need review.

Condensation#

Condensation occurs when water vapor becomes liquid water, including at surfaces cooled below the dew point of nearby air. Surface temperature, humidity, and air paths affect where it occurs.

Why it matters

A wet surface can require investigation of indoor moisture and cold surfaces as well as exterior leaks.

Continuous insulation#

Continuous insulation extends across framing rather than being confined to individual cavities. Joints, attachments, openings, and connections still require a designed detail.

Why it matters

A board fitted between studs does not provide the same framing coverage as a continuous layer outside them.

Cure#

Also called curing

Cure is the process by which applied foam develops its intended physical properties. Time, temperature, moisture, mixing, and thickness can affect it, so the exact product instructions govern.

Why it matters

A tack-free surface does not establish that trimming, covering, or unprotected occupancy is permitted.

Dense-pack insulation#

Also called dense-pack, dense packing, dense pack

Dense-pack insulation places an appropriate fibrous material in a confined cavity at the system’s specified density. It differs from loose fill resting on an open attic floor.

Why it matters

A bag count alone cannot show that blocked or irregular wall cavities were filled as specified.

Dew point#

Dew point is the temperature at which cooling air reaches saturation for its current water-vapor content. A surface below that temperature can collect condensation from nearby air.

Why it matters

A cold surface can collect condensation even when there is no rain or plumbing leak.

A drainage plane is the connected water-control surface or system behind cladding that directs water out of the assembly. Seams, flashing connections, and drainage exits must work together.

Why it matters

Drying potential#

Drying potential is an assembly’s ability to release incidental moisture toward the interior, exterior, or both. Low-permeance layers on multiple sides can reduce that ability.

Why it matters

Adding vapor-resistant layers on both sides can make an incidental wetting event harder to recover from.

Evaluation report#

Also called code evaluation report

An evaluation report documents how an exact product was evaluated against stated code provisions and conditions of use. Verify the formulation, thickness, substrate, covering, and report status rather than relying on a logo alone.

Why it matters

A report covering another formulation, covering, or installed thickness may not support the proposed work or establish local approval.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS)#

Also called EPS, expanded polystyrene

Expanded polystyrene, or EPS, is rigid cellular insulation produced from expanded polystyrene beads. Available types have different physical properties, so the actual board specification governs its use.

Why it matters

A shared EPS name does not establish the strength, moisture suitability, or thermal value needed for a particular location.

Extruded polystyrene (XPS)#

Also called XPS, extruded polystyrene

Extruded polystyrene, or XPS, is a rigid cellular insulation family produced by extrusion. Compare the specific board’s thermal and physical properties and permitted exposure conditions.

Why it matters

Board color does not establish the required product type or suitability for a foundation or roof.

Fiberglass insulation#

Also called fiberglass, glass-fiber insulation

Fiberglass insulation uses fine glass fibers and is supplied in several formats, including batts and blown material. Thermal performance depends on the specified product, thickness or density, and installation.

Why it matters

A well-filled fiberglass cavity still needs a separately defined air-control layer.

Fireblocking#

Fireblocking limits concealed draft openings in locations prescribed by code. “Fire block” foam is not automatically a rated firestop or permission to use the product in every assembly.

Why it matters

A foam labeled for fireblocking cannot be substituted for a specified rated penetration system without applicable approval.

Firestop#

Also called firestopping

A firestop is a tested system of components installed around a penetration or joint in a rated wall or floor assembly. Product color or generic “fire rated” language does not establish a listed system.

Why it matters

Changing the pipe, joint dimensions, backing, or sealant can put a penetration outside its tested system.

Sound and assemblies

Flanking transmission#

Also called flanking sound transmission

Flanking transmission is sound reaching another space through paths other than the direct route through the partition under consideration. Connected construction and shared spaces can limit the isolation achieved in a building.

Why it matters

Improving cavity insulation may leave the dominant sound path through an adjoining floor or overhead space unchanged.

Flashing#

Also called window flashing, roof flashing

Flashing directs water at vulnerable enclosure locations such as windows and roof-wall intersections. Its connection to neighboring water-control layers determines whether that water can drain outward.

Why it matters

Sealing the inside of a window gap does not fix exterior flashing that directs water into the wall.

Foam sealant#

Foam sealants are intended for defined gap and joint applications. Their permitted opening size, substrates, expansion behavior, and protective requirements come from the exact product instructions.

Why it matters

A gap-filling label does not establish whole-wall insulation performance or a rated firestop approval.

Ignition barrier#

An ignition barrier is a code-defined protective layer used in certain limited-access spaces and conditions. It is not interchangeable with a thermal barrier for occupied areas.

Why it matters

Changing an attic from service access to another use can change which protective assembly is acceptable.

Installation instructions#

Also called installation manual

Installation instructions describe preparation, installation requirements, limitations, and other conditions for a particular product or system. A brief technical-data table may not contain those directions.

Why it matters

A product substitution can require a new installation detail even when its marketing description looks similar.

Insulation inspection#

An insulation inspection checks specified properties and details such as coverage, fit, thickness, and alignment while they can be assessed. Its conclusions are limited to the inspector’s scope and methods.

Why it matters

A complete photo folder does not replace qualified checks or establish chemical cure and code compliance.

Isocyanates#

Isocyanates are reactive chemicals used to make polyurethane products, including spray foam. Application can create inhalation, skin, and eye exposure, so product-specific controls are required.

Why it matters

Exposure can cause sensitization, so a history of spraying without obvious symptoms does not establish future tolerance.

Lift#

Also called foam lift

A lift is a layer or pass of foam applied to a specified thickness. Maximum thickness and required time between lifts are exact-product limits that affect heat, cure, and quality.

Why it matters

Exceeding the product’s layer limits can create a heat or cure problem that a neat finished surface does not reveal.

Loose-fill insulation#

Also called loose-fill, loose fill

Loose-fill insulation is installed as loose fibers or particles in an application permitted by the system. For attic work, coverage records may distinguish initial installed depth from the settled condition.

Why it matters

Reaching a depth mark without the required material coverage does not establish the stated thermal performance.

Mineral wool insulation#

Also called mineral wool, stone wool insulation, rock wool insulation

Mineral wool is a family of fibrous insulation made from mineral feedstocks such as rock or slag. Cavity batts and exterior boards have different intended uses, attachment needs, and documented properties.

Why it matters

A board specified for continuous insulation is not automatically interchangeable with a cavity batt.

Off-ratio foam#

Also called off-ratio spray foam

Off-ratio foam results when a two-component system does not deliver its components in the intended proportion. Unexpected softness, persistent tackiness or oiliness, unusual brittleness, discoloration, or persistent odor need qualified evaluation; appearance cannot establish mix ratio.

Why it matters

Suspect material needs assessment before more foam or a finish conceals the condition.

One-component foam#

Also called 1K foam

One-component foam is supplied ready to dispense and typically cures using moisture in the air or substrate. Gap sealants and products approved for open-surface spraying can share this chemistry but are not interchangeable.

A gap-sealant can and a surface-spray product can use similar chemistry while permitting different applications.

Open-cell foam#

Open-cell foam is a lower-density, softer foam category with interconnected cells. Its thermal, air-control, vapor, and water behavior must be confirmed for the exact product and assembly.

Why it matters

A softer cured texture can be normal for the formulation and does not by itself prove installation failure.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)#

Also called PPE

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, can include respiratory, eye, face, skin, and body protection selected for the exact task. It supplements isolation and ventilation; it does not make an uncontrolled work zone safe.

Why it matters

Buying a mask does not replace the task assessment, training, and other controls needed for the actual exposure.

Polyisocyanurate (polyiso)#

Also called polyiso, polyisocyanurate

Polyisocyanurate, often called polyiso, is a rigid foam insulation family commonly supplied with facings. The foam core, facing, thickness, and reported test conditions all affect the documented performance.

Why it matters

A foil facing can change vapor behavior, so the core’s thermal value is only part of the wall-design decision.

Punch list#

A punch list identifies a location, the observed issue, the responsible party, and the status of an agreed correction. It organizes completion work but is not a technical diagnosis.

Why it matters

Repeated gaps or suspect material should receive the appropriate investigation rather than being closed out as cosmetic touch-ups.

R-value#

Also called thermal resistance

R-value measures resistance to heat flow under stated test conditions. It changes with thickness and does not by itself describe whole-assembly performance, air leakage, moisture durability, or code compliance.

Why it matters

A cavity insulation rating cannot be used as the whole-wall rating when framing and other heat paths remain.

Re-entry#

Re-entry means returning to a work area under specified conditions and may refer to trained, protected workers. It is not automatically the same as unprotected occupant re-occupancy.

Why it matters

Permission for a protected worker to return does not automatically permit residents or pets to move back in.

Re-occupancy#

Re-occupancy is the point when residents, children, pets, or other unprotected occupants may use the space again under stated conditions. It can require a different threshold from worker re-entry.

Why it matters

Relative humidity#

Relative humidity is water-vapor pressure expressed as a percentage of saturation vapor pressure at the same temperature. It can rise as air cools without adding moisture. It does not measure moisture held in wood or other materials.

Why it matters

One acceptable room reading does not establish that concealed wood is dry enough to cover.

A rim joist closes the ends of floor framing around the building perimeter. The neighboring sill, subfloor, and service openings create several air and moisture connections that need assessment.

Why it matters

Also called window rough opening, door rough opening

A rough opening is the opening in the wall framing that receives a window or door. The joint between that framing and the installed unit needs coordination with fastening, air sealing, and exterior drainage.

A draft behind trim may come from this fixed joint rather than from the window’s moving sash.

Also called SDS

A Safety Data Sheet, or SDS, describes product hazards, handling, protective measures, and emergency information. Use the sheet for the exact product and formulation, not a generic document from the same brand.

Why it matters

Using the wrong formulation’s SDS can leave the installer or assessor with incorrect hazard and emergency information.

Sound and assemblies

Sound absorption#

Sound absorption concerns the sound energy absorbed by materials or surfaces rather than reflected within a space. An absorption test does not measure transmission through a complete wall.

Why it matters

An absorptive room finish cannot be assumed to stop conversation passing through a partition.

Sound Transmission Class (STC)#

Also called STC, sound transmission class

Laboratory Sound Transmission Class, or STC, is derived from ASTM E90 airborne transmission measurements using the ASTM E413 rating procedure. It describes the tested construction, not an insulation sample by itself.

Why it matters

An STC printed beside a foam name does not transfer to a wall built with different framing, surfaces, or connections.

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF)#

Also called SPF, spray foam

Spray polyurethane foam, or SPF, is a broad family of polyurethane products created or applied as a spray. Small sealants, portable kits, and professional systems differ in chemistry, scale, controls, and approved use.

Why it matters

The name alone does not establish whether the product suits a small joint, an open wall, or professional roof work.

Substrate#

The substrate is the surface or material receiving the foam, such as wood, masonry, metal, or an existing membrane. Cleanliness, dryness, temperature, compatibility, and condition affect adhesion and cure.

Why it matters

Foam can conceal wet or damaged material unless the receiving surface is assessed before application.

Substrate acceptance#

Also called substrate acceptance criteria

Substrate acceptance records whether the receiving surface meets the applicable condition, moisture, cleanliness, temperature, and compatibility requirements. The responsible professional should connect observations to actual locations.

A dry-looking photograph does not establish that an intermittent leak has ended or concealed damage has been assessed.

Technical Data Sheet (TDS)#

Also called TDS, technical data sheet

A Technical Data Sheet, or TDS, reports product properties and often summarizes application limits. It must be read with the label, installation instructions, safety information, and any applicable evaluation report.

Why it matters

A thermal-performance table does not supply all worker-protection or assembly-approval requirements.

Thermal barrier#

A thermal barrier separates foam plastic from an interior space under specified code or fire-test conditions. Temperature limits and barrier integrity matter; the accepted protective assembly must fit the foam, location, and applicable code.

Why it matters

A foam-only price may omit required protection that must be installed before the assembly is complete.

Thermal bridging#

Also called thermal bridge

Thermal bridging occurs where framing, fasteners, or other conductive paths bypass or weaken the insulation layer. It is one reason cavity R-value is not the same as whole-wall or whole-roof performance.

Why it matters

Filling cavities more deeply does not eliminate heat flow through the framing beside them.

Thermal imaging#

Also called infrared imaging, thermography

Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to observe surface-temperature patterns. An anomaly may need further investigation, and interpretation depends on the inspection conditions.

Why it matters

A cold-looking area in an image does not identify its cause or establish the condition of concealed foam.

Two-component foam#

Also called 2K foam, A/B foam

Two-component foam mixes two reactive components during application. Ratio, component temperature, flow, nozzle condition, ventilation, and worker protection all affect safety and result quality.

Why it matters

Vapor permeance#

Also called water vapor permeance, perm rating

Vapor permeance measures how readily water vapor passes through a material or assembly under stated conditions. For spray foam it can change with exact formulation and installed thickness.

Why it matters

An air-barrier claim does not tell you whether the selected thickness allows the intended drying direction.

Vapor retarder#

A vapor retarder limits water-vapor diffusion according to its measured permeance. It is not the same function as an air barrier, and its appropriate class and location depend on the assembly and climate.

Why it matters

Copying a vapor-retarder location from a different climate can leave the proposed assembly with an unsuitable drying strategy.

Water-resistive barrier (WRB)#

Also called WRB, water-resistive barrier, weather-resistive barrier

A water-resistive barrier forms part of the wall’s rain-control system and connects with flashings and drainage details. A product can perform this role only within its documented installation and assembly conditions.

Why it matters

An interior foam seal cannot repair a missing or disconnected exterior water-control layer.

Weatherstripping#

Also called weather stripping

Weatherstripping seals the operating joint where a sash or door closes against its frame. It serves a different location from the fixed joint between the installed frame and the wall.

Why it matters

Filling an operating joint with foam can prevent a window or door from opening normally.

Performance and quantity

Yield#

Yield is the amount of foam a package produces, often stated in board feet under specified conditions. Advertised theoretical yield can exceed usable field yield after temperature, technique, starts and stops, and waste are considered.

Why it matters

An empty package is not evidence that its advertised volume reached the required surfaces at the specified depth.
