Know what you’re comparing.

A sealant, a wide-spray can, and an insulation kit can look similar on a shelf. Their intended jobs and supporting documents can be very different.

Joints, gaps, and penetrations

Foam sealants

A narrow bead can seal a specific opening when the label allows that use. A gap-filling product is not automatically an insulation system for an open wall.

Before you compare products

  • Check the allowed opening size and substrate.
  • Use the specified low-expansion product around windows or doors.
  • A fireblock label does not establish approval for a rated firestop assembly.

Surface-spray insulation kits

This is the product group our sister publication uses for gun-applied surface-spray kits. The name describes a format; it does not establish thermal performance, code approval, or suitability for a particular house.

Before you compare products

  • Find documented R-value at the proposed thickness.
  • Confirm the approved substrate, assembly, and covering.
  • Read the full application and exposure-control instructions.

Wide-spray cans

A wider pattern changes how material reaches the surface. It does not establish the installed R-value, air-barrier performance, or scope of work the product can support.

Before you compare products

  • Distinguish advertised coverage area from installed volume.
  • Verify the intended use in the manufacturer documents.
  • Compare the complete system, including protective covering.

Separate A-side and B-side chemicals

Two-component kits

These systems mix two components during dispensing. Product format, exposure controls, job conditions, and installer competence all matter. Being sold as a portable kit does not make a job appropriate for an untrained homeowner.

Before you compare products

  • Read both component safety data sheets.
  • Resolve work-area isolation, ventilation, and reentry requirements.
  • Have a qualified installer assess work beyond your training or controls.
