How decisions are made

Editorial and Recommendation Policy

A useful recommendation states the assembly, conditions, evidence, uncertainty, commercial relationship, and date of the check.

Assembly before product

Content begins with the building area, existing condition, moisture source, air and vapor strategy, safety boundary, and alternative materials. A contextual link to exact-product research can appear only after those checks.

Source hierarchy

  1. Applicable law, local authority, official model-code and listed-assembly records.
  2. U.S. government health, safety, energy, and building-science guidance.
  3. Exact manufacturer label, SDS, TDS, evaluation report, test report, and warranty.
  4. Documented field observations and qualified expert review.
  5. Secondary explanations for context, never as the sole support for a high-risk claim.

Product examples and store links

Selected material-format guides may show specific products from Best Spray Foam, our sister publication under common ownership. Each example must match the guide’s job and format, identify the exact package, link to its research record, and provide only checked store destinations. The store link goes directly to Amazon or Walmart; readers do not have to pass through Best Spray Foam to shop.

A product card may show the Amazon customer star rating and rating count observed for that exact ASIN. The card names Amazon, prints the observation date, and warns that the current value may differ. We do not copy customer review text or present the marketplace signal as our product score. We do not reproduce price or availability. A one-component gap filler is not a two-component cavity kit; a professional-use kit is not presented as a beginner project. Safety, problem-response, and emergency guidance does not carry store calls to action. A product can be excluded when its intended use, documents, or identity does not fit.

Commercial relationships

Related ownership and the actual commission status are disclosed before each affected product section. Eligible Amazon product links use the Spray Foam Guides Associates tracking ID; Walmart links are currently ordinary store links. Affiliate links use sponsored-link qualification. Commission rate cannot determine inclusion, order, score, or wording. Advertising is labeled and cannot interrupt safety warnings, tools, print checklists, or failure-response steps.

Videos and community discussions

If we add a video or a community discussion, we will explain why it is relevant, identify its creator, and link to the original. Views, likes, and upvotes do not establish technical accuracy. A demonstration must be considered alongside the exact product instructions, building conditions, and safety limits. A video cannot establish that a method is suitable for your building.

We will use an available official player or embed within its terms, identify the video's language, and keep essential guidance readable without playing it. An embed does not give us the right to download, reupload, translate, or republish the creator's work in another form. See the YouTube terms and Reddit embed terms.

Homeowner and contractor experiences

If we publish a field account, we will distinguish what the homeowner or contractor reports from what the supporting records establish and what a reviewer actually checked. We will identify relevant conditions, the product format, the observation period, and important unknowns. We will not present an unverified job title as a credential or describe another person's work as our own test.

A single job does not establish typical results or prove why a problem occurred. We will disclose known payment, free products, or business relationships that could affect how readers assess an account. Private messages, customer records, identifiable property details, and photos need an appropriate basis for publication; they are not made publishable simply by appearing in a discussion.

Quotations, permissions, and translations

Public access and attribution alone do not grant permission to copy someone's words, photos, or video. Before publishing third-party material, we will record the applicable license, permission, platform terms, or a case-specific basis for quotation. There is no fixed number of words that automatically makes a quotation fair use under U.S. law. The U.S. Copyright Office explains this distinction.

Permission for one use will not be treated as permission for every use. We will check whether it covers translation, editing, commercial context, and use on both publications. A translated quotation will be identified as a translation and kept faithful to its meaning. An English source's technical review does not count as a separate review of the Spanish wording. If a source changes, disappears, or raises a rights concern, we will review the affected material and correct, replace, or remove it as appropriate.

Evidence shared with Best Spray Foam

The two publications may consult the same manufacturer documents or refer to the same documented work. Repeating that evidence on two sites does not make it independent corroboration. Spray Foam Guides explains project decisions; Best Spray Foam provides separate product research. A link to that research does not replace a primary source or transfer a product score, field-test claim, or reviewer approval to this guide.

Corrections and factual responses

Readers, manufacturers, sellers, and contributors can request a correction and provide supporting documents. No purchase or payment is required, and a private contact option is available. We consider factual responses and rights concerns; commercial partners do not receive approval rights over our conclusions. A correction request does not automatically change a finding or guarantee favorable coverage.

Source checks and review dates

Our technical source review records the version checked, subjects examined, corrections, and access limits. Editorial review is separate from independent specialist approval. A material edit requires another check of the changed claims. Historical source-check records stay dated to the work actually performed; they do not become approval of new claims.

Updates and dates

The modified date changes only after a meaningful content, source, method, or recommendation update. Each publication maintains its own research dates. Publication, meaningful content revision, source checking, specialist review, and Spanish translation are separate records. A translated page identifies its English source version; a source change requires a translation check. Safety and code-sensitive pages are queued for source review at least every six months and whenever a cited source changes.

Hard prohibitions

  • Fake authors, credentials, tests, photos, quotes, awards, or first-hand experience.
  • Universal re-entry time, thickness, vapor, fire, or code claims detached from the exact product and assembly.
  • Commission-driven rankings or hidden related-party endorsements.
  • Copied or lightly rewritten content across Spray Foam Guides and Best Spray Foam.
  • Programmatic state or city pages without maintainable local evidence.
